Play Ball!

The Padres begin their season tonight, with the EBE visiting: Clayton Kershaw vs. Tyson Ross.

I do not think this will be a good season for the Friars. I do think it will be an interesting season; I'd like to see what Spangenberg and Solarte can do with a full season, and Jabari Blash could be exciting. I hope Myers can stay healthy....

But the most exciting part of the season will be the draft and the international signing period, I'll bet.

I was just browsing one of the blogs I regularly visit, and saw a link to an article on "the new slide rule". Of course, my metaphorical ears pricked up.

It took me several seconds to remember that I was looking at a baseball blog.

Clayton Kershaw, ace pitcher for the EBE - three-time Cy Young winner, 2014 MVP, five-time All-Star - is the great-nephew of Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of the ex-planet Pluto.

Small world (pun only semi-intentional).

Thirty-one years ago today, the San Diego Padres won a World Series game.

Never happened before.

Hasn't happened since.

Despair

There are two or three fan websites devoted to the San Diego Padres. I have been visiting them regularly for years.

Right now? I feel more like avoiding them. It's just too painful.

Whatchoo gonna do now, A.J.?

I would kind of like to know how many times in their overlapping major-league careers Jim Gott pitched to Tim Teufel, and what the results were.

The Padres season has started in an... interesting fashion.

They lost a game. 1.
They won a game. 1.
They lost two games. 2.
They won three games. 3.
They lost last night. If this stretches into a five-game losing streak, I am going to freak out.

A New Week

Last week was kind of a bummer. The Sad/Rabid Puppies crap, a less-than-stellar Annual Evaluation, the Padres' sluggish start, and a couple of other things I'm not going to talk about.... There are times when I just get so tired of everything.

Not that the week was a complete wreck. Monday night, as I was trying to get to sleep, the answer to a research question that had been bothering me for a couple of years finally came clear; the Padres came back with wins on Friday and Saturday (beating up Bumgarner pretty badly last night); the weather's been good - a few things on the right side of the balance.

My dinners the last two weeks have been reruns - jambalaya, and beef and barley soup - but this week I'm trying my hand at chicken cacciatore (that dish beloved of the American revolutionaries, back in '76). It's still got about six hours to cook, but it's already smelling good.

Here's to a new week, and better fortune!

On a happier note, today is Opening Day, and my beloved Padres appear set to make a splash.

MLB Trade Rumors has a poll going as to which team had the best offseason, and the Padres are far in front, with nearly a majority of votes cast. I'm still a bit hesitant about "best", but "most exciting", certainly. Last night's acquisition of Craig Kimbrel was completely unexpected, and gives the Padres easily the best bullpen in the major leagues. Their starting rotation - Shields, Ross, Cashner, Kennedy, and Morrow - can bear comparison with any other. It's not quite as good as the Dodgers or Nationals rotations, but it's not far behind. Offensively, barring injuries, they're a force to be reckoned with - Kemp, J. Upton, and Myers to start with, plus possible rebounds from Norris, Alonso, Gyorko, and Middlebrook. Defense... :wince: They could be less than stellar in the outfield, and Norris is not the pitch-framer that Grandal and Rivera both were. Shortstop is still a weak spot, as well.

Overall? I think they'll definitely be in the hunt for a playoff spot, and if the EBE stumbles they could charge all the way to a division title. The playoffs themselves are a crapshoot, and I think the Padres would have as good a chance as anyone to win the pennant if they get in.

I'm pegging them at about 90 wins. :crosses fingers:

Rock Star

I have to admit being nonplussed by the fact that, for fans of the San Diego Padres, the number one hero at the moment is A. J. Preller - the GM.

I don't recall "Trader Jack" McKeon getting this kind of adulation back in the day. Of course, even in his best off-season, he didn't execute the kind of roster overhaul Preller has.

I like the Shields signing, and for the most part I like the trades AJP's pulled off. I'm still wistful about Trea Turner (but he was years off at best) and Jesse Hahn (but, even without him, the rotation and bullpen are both stronger than last year).

Should be an exciting year.

Cap Anson

One of the e-books I'm currently reading is A Ball Player's Career, the "autobiography" of the 19th century baseball star Cap Anson. (That it's ghost-written is painfully obvious.) It's moderately interesting, reading, for example, Anson's descriptions and evaluations of his fellow players (a few of whom I've actually heard of, like Al Spalding and "Old Hoss" Radbourne). But I've hit a couple of passages that stand out a little more than that.

First: I knew that Anson was a virulent racist, and was one of the main reasons baseball imposed the color bar, refusing to play against another team that had a black player. Naturally, most of the narrative doesn't touch this, but there's a passage where he enlists a young black man as the team mascot, and the language with which he describes the youngster - well, the phrase that begins with "no-account" is the mildest of it. Nasty man....

There's another bit, describing a barnstorming tour that led them across the continent and all the way to Australia. At one point, they spend a couple of weeks in San Francisco; Anson found its geography and architecture disappointing. The passage reads:
The really fine buildings, too, were few and far between, the majority of them being low wooden structures that looked like veritable fire-traps. They are built of redwood, however, and this, according to the natives, is hard to burn. The fact that the towns had not burned down yet would seem to bear out the truth of their assertion, though the Baldwin Hotel was built of the same material, and that went up in flames a little over a year ago[...]"
The book was published in 1900. (Anson played for the Chicago team, though he went there some years after that city's great fire.)

It isn't an eye-opening book, but it's decently interesting.

This article in The Hardball Times makes a pretty good case: Rene Rivera, who started the season as the Padres' third-string catcher, has emerged as one of the best defensive catchers in the league, and was a major reason for the outstanding pitching the team displayed in 2014. There's a reason Andrew Cashner insists on having Rivera catch when he pitches.

Bad Deal

I see that Corey Kluber won the AL Cy Young award this year. It turns out that Kluber was once a Padres farmhand. The Padres shipped him to Cleveland as part of a three-team deal; St. Louis was the third team. In exchange, the Padres got... Ryan Ludwick.

In his brief career with the Padres - parts of two seasons - Ludwick provided them with -0.9 WAR. His offense was pathetic, and his defense was worse.

It wasn't the worst deal the Padres have ever made, but it's definitely up there.

Weekend

I'm still awaiting the restoration of my Mathematica files and my distant-login capabilities. My copy of Geometer's Sketchpad is also missing.

Despite the lack of my Mathematica files, I've managed to gain some ground on the polygons front; I've discovered a new class of hexagons, and proved a rather unexpected theorem about them. I really should start writing this stuff up.

I'm just about done with my current game of Skyrim. The character has completed all of the questlines I wanted him to pursue - the main quest, the civil war (Imperial), the Companions and Thieves' Guild questlines, and Dawnguard (as a Dawnguard). There remain seven books that he hasn't been able to acquire (and may not be able to), and the task of reading the books he has acquired. This guy was primarily a warrior, with some thieving skills and next to no magic. I'm dithering over the next game: shall I go with a High Elf mage, or an Argonian thief-assassin? (The latter character, when I activate him, is going to be a real bastard....) I have to make some tweaks to the database before I begin the next game, mostly to deal with the problem of (re)gaining the thaneship in a hold after it changes hands in the civil war.

One of the e-books I've been reading recently was an interesting collection of Navajo legends, assembled by Washington Matthews in the late 19th century. I got it from Internet Archive, and I have to say I'm disappointed with the e-version. Matthews transcribed Navajo personal and place names using a number of symbols not in the Latin alphabet, and the OCR that the Archive used - I assume it's OCR - didn't handle it very well. The same name might appear several times on the same page, written differently each time. Usually, it's easy to recognize that the same name is intended - the variations are more-or-less predictable - but it's still annoying.

We've definitely moved into fall. I actually began growing my winter beard at the tail end of September; we had a rather abrupt cold snap then, and though the weather has bounced back up to late-summer temperatures a couple of times since, the warm spells have been brief and temporary. I usually don't start the beard until mid- or late October, but it looks like it might be a rough winter.

The Padres once again put together a fairly strong second half, but once again fell short of the playoffs. I'm kind of rooting for an all-Missouri World Series. The Chargers are off to a strong start; let's see how long they can maintain it....

A-? A+!

The San Diego Padres have just announced that their short-season Class A (A-, for short) farm team will be moving to the Tri-Cities, Washington, next season.

It took me a bit to figure out why that sounded familiar, but the Tri-Cities area is the home base of auto-mechanic/adventurer Mercy Thompson, in a series of urban fantasies by Patricia Briggs. (The series starts with Moon Called, and it's pretty good of its type.)

Small world....

Better

stoutfellow: My summer look (Summer)
My mood has improved somewhat. Contributory factors:

1) The Padres just completed a three-game sweep of the Reds - their first three-game sweep since last September. Granted, they only got one hit in the first game, and only scored one run - without any hits - but the other guys didn't score at all, so.... Kennedy pitched well yesterday, and the bats awoke for an 8-2 win, and Tyson Ross got his first career shutout today. (Rene Rivera hitting a three-run single. Yeah, I've never heard of that one before. The runners were going on the pitch, and the center fielder fell down.) It ain't that much, but the way this season's gone, it's cause for celebration.

2) I finished the Skyrim database project, and have put it into action in my current game. There are still some bugs, both in code and data, but I'm getting them straightened out. Basically, the db helps me keep track of what-all I've done, what I can do next, etc. - makes for a more efficient game. It's going well so far.

3) This is probably bad of me, but Summer Semester ends on the 27th, after which I have a full month off before the next semester begins. (I should probably use it looking after medical matters, mine and the dogs'.)

Not everything is happymaking (:snarls in the direction of the Supreme Court:), but I'm not going to dwell on that just now.
stoutfellow: My summer look (Summer)
I am extremely depressed about the Padres so far this season. Injuries to too many pitchers, Mendoza-line performances by half the starting lineup, Cabrera losing his stolen-base touch, Stults losing his pitching touch, Gyorko losing everything....

I wasn't familiar with John Mellencamp before buying his Life Death Love Freedom album - I knew "Jack and Diane", but that's about it - but I like what I hear on that album. He's pretty grim, mostly, ranging from somber ("Troubled Land") through creepy ("County Fair") to angry ("Jena"), but it seems solid, grounded, sincere - something in that area. It'd be a monotonous diet if taken by itself, but it provides an excellent flavor to a varied playlist.

I've just about finished the course of ulcer medication they prescribed, so it's about time I got in touch with the GI doctor to set up another appointment. They'll shove another camera down my throat, and a colonoscopy is probably on the menu now or soon. Not an appealing prospect.

My sister C will be in town next week; we'll be going out to eat on Monday.

I dunno. There are things I should be happy about, but overall my mood lately is on the dour side. Gotta work through it anyway; there are things that need doing.

Good Things

1. The Padres won today, snapping a four-game losing streak.

2. I managed (after some puzzling failures) to set up an account with the Shop'n'Save Pharmacy and order the refill of my prescription on-line, complete with e-mail notification when it was ready.

3. The weather is finally spring-like: 70s F today, 80s tomorrow and for several days after.

4. I've overcome a roadblock in the Skyrim project, and am moving forward on one of the two most complex parts.

5. I've begun reading Pepys' Diary; the main interest so far is the fluctuation of public opinion in the period between the fall of Tumbledown Dick and the Restoration. Shall we support Richard (Cromwell), George (Monk), or Charles (Stuart)? (I've only made it into mid-March, 1660. This is going to take a while....)

6. I'll be giving finals on Tuesday, which is also the day of the department's Cinco (plus one) de Mayo potluck, celebrating the end of the semester. The diff. geo. take-homes are due Thursday. By sometime Friday, I'll be on break.

7. I'm not always tired anymore!

Norf Again

Last night, the Padres clawed their way back to .500, with a 3-1 win over the Giants. Cabrera hit a run-scoring triple - he's showing more extra-base power this season, so far! But the real treat was the third run: Denorfia laid down a perfect bunt with Venable on third, and the Giants had no play at the plate.

Dad would have loved to see that. He was always complaining that the Padres didn't go for the squeeze play often enough, and this was a textbook safety squeeze.

Now let's try for above .500, shall we?

Spring

It's definitely spring.

1. My allergies have come back with a vengeance. I can't afford to skip my antihistamines, as I occasionally could in winter; last Thursday, I skipped, and it was brutal - eyes, nose, and throat all in pain by the time I was able to get home and dose myself.

2. Today, I walked over to Shop'n'Save for groceries, wearing a heavy T-shirt - no coat or windbreaker. (Sister C, it's the Beatles shirt you gave me over the holidays. That was you, wasn't it?)

3. Opening Day! I'm not particularly sanguine about the Padres this year, especially with yet another rash of injuries, but I do want to see what a full season with Cabrera, Gyorko, Grandal, Cashner, and Ross will be like. :knocks wood:

(Interesting. Semagic's spell-checker accepts "Cabrera" and "Ross", but not the other three.)
