al_zorra reminds me that today is the 200th birthday of Ulysses S. Grant. He was a superb general, a better President than he's often made out to be (although there were also some serious blemishes on that part of his record), and a suprisingly good writer. If you're a Civil War buff and haven't read his memoirs - at least volume two, which deals with the Slavers' Rebellion - you really ought to.
