A bit of a possible snag has emerged. According to the shelter's rules, an unfixed dog cannot be adopted out until it is fixed. They'll do the operation on-site, but the vet who does it only comes by once or twice a week. So... If the dogs that catch my fancy happen to be already fixed, then they'll come home with me on Friday. If not, it may be a few more days. We shall see.

The best-laid schemes....

No plan survives the first encounter with the enemy? ;)

Which raises the question: who is the enemy, here?

Why, the system, always the system!

In practice, does this mean you can say 'that dog', and they'll hold it for you until it's neutered? If not, why do they even show them as adoptable before they're neutered?

Yes. The lag time is less than a week, I was told, but they wouldn't commit to anything more precise than that.

Doh!! While I certainly understand wanting all adopted pets to be spayed/neutered, why in the world do they have to do it that way? When we got Casey, we signed a form pledging to have her spayed at 6 months, and then we had to return proof that it had been done. (They could have seized her from us if we hadn't.)

This way seems a bit...extreme.

That was the policy back when I adopted Ben, but that was fifteen years ago, and apparently they've changed it.

I know a week is small in the grand scheme of things, but -- darnit, it's the principle of the thing! Here's hoping the ones you want are already neutered.

Fixed? Why would they have broken puppies? ;-)

Actual, here at our local animal shelter, the cost of the neutering is donated by a local vet. (That helps to keep the cost of adoption down.) We made arraignments for the neutering when we adopted our cats, and we were able to take them home with us. (Of course, maybe they were just full up with cats and needed the space.)

Do you have a preference of males or females? The names you mentioned earlier sound more like male names to me.

It has been almost a year since we had to put down Stinky. I find I miss him more than I thought I would.

Thanks - Peter

Hm. I don't have a conscious preference, but all of the dogs I've lived with as an adult have been male. I dunno.

I find I miss him more than I thought I would.

I still have occasional flashes of grief. The oddest things can remind me.

Oh, I so hope the wee doggies that catch your fancy will have already been neutered. But I'm very glad you found this out in advance; as a bit of information gleaned only *after* arrival, this would have been quite a facer :(

Best of luck, pal...
