EGS: Susan

Susan Pompoms is probably my favorite character, among the main eight. This may have something to do with why I've had so much trouble writing this installment. Anyway, it's under the cut.

Nanase Kitsune was the sixth of the main eight to put in an appearance: her turn.

The fox knows many things )
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
Justin Tolkiberry (the name is a portmanteau of Tolkien and Roddenberry, says Dan Shive) is one of the more neglected members of the core eight, but he showed up very early in the series and it's his turn.

Tranquil as a forest... )

EGS: Grace

Grace Sciuridae is next up.

Squirrel! )
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
Sarah Brown was the third of the central eight characters to be introduced, so it's her turn.

Everygal )
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
Tedd and Elliot were the first two characters to appear in EGS, so it's Elliot's turn, under the cut.

Born wearing a Scout's uniform )

I have a fairly large collection of backgrounds; my computer cycles through them, switching once a day. One, which I've had literally for years, is from Girl Genius.

The picture depicts Gil (on the left) envisioning Agatha (on the right) in someone's arms. It was not until this evening that I noticed that the someone has red hair and glasses; i.e., it's not Gil, but Tarvek. Not wish-fulfillment, but fear-fulfillment.

How on Earth did I not notice that until now?

EGS: Tedd

Of the major characters in El Goonish Shive, Tedd Verres is not exactly my favorite; far from it. But he was one of the first to appear, and his actions are central to the development of the plot, so he gets the first entry. Under the cut, of course.

So, El Goonish Shive. I expect to make several posts about that webcomic over the next few weeks. Mainly, this is because I've tried three times to sign up for the EGS forums, without success, and it seems that this is not at all unusual. Well, if I can't talk about it there, I'll talk about it here. Of course, it'll go under a cut.

Miscellany

1. One of the best things about using a slow cooker is the way the cooking smells slowly pervade the house. (Savory Slow-Cooked Grains is on the menu for this week.)

2. It occurred to me to wonder just how many webcomics I follow. Some of them have LiveJournal feeds; the rest are sorted into folders in my Bookmark list - Comics M, Comics T, Comics W, etc., culminating in Comics U, for those whose schedule is not tied to the week. (Yes, that means that most comics appear in more than one folder. It's simpler for me, that way.) Anyway, I just pulled the data together and discovered that I currently follow no less than sixty-seven webcomics. The full list is under the cut.
What I Read )

3. I just finished reading William Dampier's book on his voyage to New Holland and back. It's strangely engaging; not too much exciting happens, but his careful descriptions of what he saw in the places he touched land are interesting. (He's careful to distinguish what he actually saw from what people he met told him about; though he mentions the two-headed amphisbaena, for instance, he makes clear that he never saw one.) There are also a lot of drawings, of the lands he passed and of the animals and plants he mentions, but the display on the Kindle is too small. I may have to go through the copy on my home computer, just to look at the pictures.

Goblins

I've been following the webcomic Goblins for about six years now, and loving it. In the "Maze of Many" plotline, the developing attraction between Minmax and Kin has been a delight.

Has been.

The update two weeks ago was heartbreaking. (Ruby, you monster!)

The last update, five days ago, was horrifying. (... Was Ruby right?)

Today's update will be late. I'm fannishly terrified at what Thunt (the artist/writer) is going to do next.
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
I am indescribably pleased with Minmax - our Minmax, of course. No Intelligence or Wisdom to speak of, but damn, he knows how to win a fight! (Of course, the Villain's Taunting Monologue(tm) gave him the clue he needed, but nobody else thought of it....)

Chairs

In the current "Freefall", Florence, having been kidnapped by Clippy, has been tied to a chair and is being interrogated by the parkae. I can't help thinking of how Mark Vorkosigan handled being tied to a chair, and likewise Ivan Vorpatril. Neither of their strategies seems available to Florence, sadly.

Education

I haven't been as amused as usual by Skin Horse during the current storyline, but this strip, from a week or so ago, gives me the giggles. The female in the pink dress is a robot drone, previously operated by the cyborg helicopter Nick Zerhakker; Nick has just been pre-empted by an emergent AI who needs a body for a little while. Take a look.
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
This actually sounds like it could be a fun game.

Everblue

Everblue is a quirky webcomic with, alas, a rather erratic posting schedule. The current sequence is a flashback, involving two of the characters (adoptive siblings). This strip and the two which follow are just... sweet. Check it out.
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
I don't know if any of you are following Everblue; it's a fairly entertaining comic, so far. The most recent page - Page 15-5 - is apparently transitional; as I understand it, the strip will be introducing two more characters, who will round out the crew. This page is pleasant; Luna, the female lead, has finally regained her equilibrium, following her flight from assassination in her hometown. I have to say, though, that something concerns me.

Luna was literally pulled to safety by her friend Ten - the male lead - with nothing but the clothes on her back. They're headed off into the unknown - and she has no other clothes, nor the money to buy more (if they should reach a place where such purchase would be possible). I love these two kids, but they don't seem to have recognized certain necessities. Digger would have known better....
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
this is what we all dream of.
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
Anybody know what's going on with "Girls With Slingshots", "Goblins", and "Something Positive"? I get "This page is temporarily unavailable" messages when I try to visit any of those three.
stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
Has it ever been determined whether Superman's X-ray vision can penetrate his own eyelids? (Question prompted by the latest JL8 comic.)
