Ex-Presidents

The United States has had four great ex-Presidents. None of them was particularly successful as President, but each of them more than redeemed themselves afterward.
John Quincy Adams, standing in the well of the House, fighting tooth and nail against the Slavers, and finally collapsing and dying there, standing and fighting to the last..
William Howard Taft, taking control of the Supreme Court and making it more efficient and more effective.
Herbert Hoover, getting relief operations going in postwar Europe (as he had after World War I, and after the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927) and leading commissions on making government more efficient, in the service of Presidents of both parties.
And then there's Jimmy Carter, to my mind the greatest of the four. Fred Clarke has a nice overview of Carter's life on Slacktivist.
We're going to lose him soon, and it will be a loss.
