Opening Day

Classes began today. Today was also my first chance to get onto campus since the move. First thing, I plopped into my chair and turned on the computer... or, rather, pushed the "On" button on the computer. Nothing happened. After another couple of exploratory pokes, I got up and went around to the other side of the computer. It was not plugged in. More precisely, there was no power cord.
There was a perfectly good power cord on it when I left. Somewhere between the two (not very distant) buildings it had disappeared. I corralled an OIT tech, who found me a power cord but then remarked that the Ethernet cable was also missing. He suggested that the Chair had some, so I went to the Chair's secretary and we searched his office. We found an Ethernet cable, and I bounced back to my office.
It did manage to reach from my computer to the wall outlet, but only by hanging about at knee-height halfway across the office. I plugged it in anyway and made a quick check to make sure that everything was working. Then I went back to haunt the Chair's office. When I finally found him, he had no difficulty finding the extra-long cables we needed. After some effort, including climbing up on my chair to get it to slide behind the bookcase, I threaded it all the way around the walls to the outlet.
All is, if not well, at least better. I've unpacked most of my books and begun the shelving process. The magazines and files remain in their boxes.
The office is fairly nice; the furniture is, by and large, better quality than what I had before. Unfortunately, the movers neglected to bring a chair for my students (though I had tagged a chair with my office number). I have managed to find the important rooms - Chair's office, main office, faculty lounge, restroom (in the men's locker room, by the gym...) - and have begun mapping fast routes to the classroom buildings. I'm still somewhat disoriented, though, and will probably remain so for a week or so, at least.
Grmph. Change makes things different! :shakes cane:
