Album Title: Falling Into You
Why I Bought It: This was the fourth and last Celine album I bought. The previous album, The Colour of My Love, had been varied enough in form and topic that I was still interested.
What I Like (Thunderous): "It's All Coming Back to Me Now". This is the same kind of song as her "I Remember L.A.", about the temptations of a too-well-remembered love affair. It's not as good as its predecessor, though, ending with an open-ended and sighing sentence fragment.
What I Like (Wounded): "Call the Man". "The man" is an imagined specialist in repairing broken hearts, and Celine works the idea fairly well.
What I Don't Like (Trying Too Hard): "Fly". A song of farewell to a deceased friend; Celine insists on singing it in a breathy voice, which doesn't appeal to me at all. Linda Ronstadt showed how to do it right in "Goodbye, My Friend".
What I Don't Like (Weak Cover): "All by Myself". Sorry, but nobody can touch Harry Nilsson on this one. Celine's version doesn't have the heart of Nilsson's.
Overall: A rather weak album; that it was the last of her albums I bought is not a coincidence. "Make You Happy" isn't bad, and her rendition of "River Deep, Mountain High" is passable, but for the most part she seemed rather stale to me here.
