I've decided to take the plunge and buy an e-reader sometime in the next few days. I just want a dedicated reader, not a Pad or anything more sophisticated. Does anyone have any recommendations - hardware, software, or whatnot?

My friends are currently raving about the Kindle Paperwhite as an e-reader.

Get Calibre - it is an e-book management app. It also translates between many different e-book formats. It's available for Windows (32-bit & 64-bit, and Portable), Mac OSX, and Linux.

Then add the set of Calibre plug-ins that Apprentice Alf maintains that strip DRM off of e-books of many kinds. There are also stand-alone versions of many of the tools, but using the plug-ins makes it VERY easy. With the plug-ins installed, you drag-and-drop your e-book into Calibre, and it strips off the DRM automagically.

I don't know if my Kindle is a paperwhite or not (it doesn't seem to say so anywhere on it, and I've long since ditched the packaging as it was a gift a couple of years ago), but I love it, and I heartily second the Calibre rec. You can add all sorts of reading matter to a Kindle with it.

Also, I don't use the wireless capability, because I don't have wifi at home (on purpose -- if I had wifi, I'd never get any writing done because then it would be too easy to connect my laptop to the internet). I use the USB transfer method, and it works just fine.
