Album Title: Elenore
Why I Bought It: This is part of a five-disk "Collected Turtles" set. The only song that I knew to be theirs was "Happy Together" (not on this disk), which I liked enough to take a flyer on the whole set.
What I Like (Happy): "You Baby". A joyous love song, with a catchy tune and some nice understated drumwork. Honorable Mention: "Elenore" - a little trite in the wording, but good nonetheless.
What I Like (Reverent): "Earth Anthem". Soft, slow, and moving. A song of praise and devotion; unlike their other (and rather frenetic) environmentalist song, "Chicken Little Was Right", this one is calm and serious. And this is not an island / This is our home
What I Like (Soaring): "You Know What I Mean". Never mind the lyrics; just take it as music. Driving walking-pace rhythm in the verses, and good horns and drums in the chorus.
What I Don't Like (Shrill): "We Ain't Gonna Party No More". An antiwar song, undercut by the lyrics. You're against the war, so you're going to stop partying? Yes, I know, the implication is that they'll do something more serious, but the words don't work for me.
Overall: The WILs are among my favorite Turtles songs, but most of the rest don't do much for me and some - "Love Minus Zero", "The Last Thing I Remember", "Outside Chance" - grate on my ears. So-so overall, but with some excellent bits.
