I am spending the long weekend in traditional fashion, by going shopping. Today, I paid a visit to the Chef's Shoppe, located in one of the nearby strip malls. I bought a large (13") frying pan from them a couple of years ago, but it's not suitable for small-scale things like scrambled eggs. I did have a smaller one, but it was in two pieces - metal body, plastic handle - and the pieces were held together by a screw. The screw was worn and the threads were stripped, so that I could no longer rely on the handle staying on - which, I think most will agree, is a very bad thing for a frying pan. That, then, was my main intention in visiting the Shoppe.
I also wanted to get a new timer; the old mechanical one broke a while back, so I'd decided to buy an electronic one, hopefully longer-lived. Had these two items been all, things would have gone smoothly. Unfortunately, I was also led into a couple of impulse buys. They had what looked like a wider and higher-quality selection of coffees than Shop'n'Save does, so I was tempted into buying a pound of their Sumatra beans. This would not have been a problem either. The problem arose when I noticed, and began lusting after, a slow-cooker....
The cooker outweighed the rest of the items taken together by a considerable amount. It proved possible for me to balance it on one shoulder while carrying the other things in my other hand, but in the course of the walk - the better part of a mile - shoulder aches forced me to switch shoulders, then switch again, at decreasing intervals. Fortunately, a kind stranger stopped and gave me a lift. (It turned out that he was going to a garage sale, right across the street from me.) So, I made it home....
All seems well. The timer confounded me for a time, until I realized that there was a thin plastic sheet reading "99:59" glued on top of the display; when I peeled that off, things were much better. I don't know when I'll find the need to use any of these items, but the pan and the slow-cooker have been on my to-get list for quite a while, and I'm sure I'll find uses for them.
Tomorrow: clothes and bedding.
