Sunday Music: Donovan's Greatest Hits
May. 5th, 2013 03:11 pmAlbum Title: Donovan's Greatest Hits
Why I Bought It: On impulse. I knew him as the singer of "Sunshine Superman" and "Mellow Yellow", but when I saw "Hurdy-Gurdy Man" and "Jennifer Juniper" on this album, I had to buy it.
What I Like (Sweet): "Jennifer Juniper". A very pretty description of the beloved, soft and gentle. Honorable Mention: "Lalena".
What I Like (Joyous): "Wear Your Love Like Heaven". I particularly like the rhythm-shift between the rapid verse ("Kiss me once more / Fill me with song") and the slow chorus. I'm not entirely sure what it's about, but that's usually the case with Donovan, isn't it?
What I Like (Weird): "Sunshine Superman". I prefer this bit of psychedelia by a hair over "Mellow Yellow".
Overall: Mostly, this is a fun album. I mentioned "Hurdy Gurdy Man" above, but you can throw the strangeness of "Epistle to Dippy" and "There Is A Mountain" and the pensiveness of "Colours" and "Catch the Wind" into the pot as well. About the only song on the album that doesn't do much for me is "Season of the Witch" - as incomprehensible as the rest, but not as pleasant to the ear.
