stoutfellowAlbum Title: Don Quixote
Why I Bought It: This was my first Lightfoot album; I was drawn in by the title track, which I'd heard on the radio and which was the first Lightfoot song I'd heard in the knowledge that it was a Lightfoot song.
What I Like (Quixotic): "Don Quixote". The mix of slightly off-kilter imagery (in a flash of tangled hooves) and passion - knight, prophet, preacher - is grimly amusing.
What I Like (Autonymic): "Beautiful". It is.
What I Like (HOME!): "Alberta Bound". A joyous song of homecoming.
What I Don't Like (Unmelodic): "Ode to Big Blue". I approve of blue whales, especially those which elude pursuit for all their lives, but this song just doesn't sound good.
What I Don't Like (Preachy): "The Patriot's Dream". Most of Lightfoot's songs with political content fail, for me. ("Don Quixote" is an exception; "Pride of Man", not on this album, is another.) The music of this one is harsh - which I suppose is appropriate, given the content, but it repels me. I'll admit that a couple of the verses are moving - the one about the young bride-to-be, in particular - but the last verse, with its strawman villain, negates them.
Overall: Most of the album ranges from pleasant to beautiful; in addition to the WILs above, add the pastoral "Christian Island", the melancholy "Looking at the Rain", and the nostalgic "On Susan's Floor". The two WIDLs are joined only by "Brave Mountaineers", which does nothing for me. It's not the best album of his that I have, but it's a good one nonetheless.

Date: 2013-04-22 02:06 am (UTC)Lightfoot was (and is) one of my alltime favorite singers/songwriters. I first discovered him in college way back when, and he's the only performer I've ever gone to see multiple times [g].
My favorite song of his is "Carefree Highway."
