Ten things I've done that you may not have:

1. Been interviewed by the local paper on the occasion of the proof of Fermat's Last.
2. Lived through a hurricane - in the state of Washington.
3. Spent the night sleeping on the grass in front of the train station in Naples, Italy.
4. Given a subcutaneous drip to a sick dog.
5. Hiked sixty-plus miles in eight days in the Sierra.
6. Belly-crawled through a narrow muddy passageway in a cave in Tennessee.
7. Read Purgatorio and Paradiso (instead of stopping with Inferno).
8. Sat on the reef that encloses Pearl Harbor.
9. Voted for Barry Commoner for President. (It was 1980, and I was disgusted with everybody.)
10. Represented my high school in a wrestling match and in a Math Fair.

I'm afraid you have a fellow Dante-phile in your friends list!

When was the hurricane, btw? And were you here for the amazing (that is, if you lived within sight of any power stations) ice storm?

We lived in Washington between, I think, 1962 and 1965; the hurricane was probably late in that period.

No. 1, *very* cool!

No. 3, more uncomfortable I imagine than the night that I and four friends (one of whom is now my stepsister) arrived in Innsbruck, Austria too late to get into the Youth Hostel, so had to sleep on the floor of the train station. The worst was hearing people taking early morning trains muttering comments about the drunk Americans sleeping it off. We *weren't* drunk! You were probably cold and damp outside. Ugh.

No. 6 gives me chills.

No. 10. Wow. That *is* an unusual combination!

On #1: it was a fifteen-minute phone interview; they were calling all of the local colleges, and I'm the closest thing our department has to an expert on number theory. They did quote me in the article.

#3: It was a warm night in late July, and there were quite a few people there - enough that it wasn't nervous-making.

#10: Well, I was only on the JV wrestling team, but I did get into one match, which I lost. I did much better on the math team...
