Album Title: A Decade of Hits
Why I Bought It: For "Still in Saigon"
What I Like (Feisty): "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". Okay, so it doesn't really make much sense, but the story of the justly cocky Johnny is a good one.
What I Like (Horrific): "Still in Saigon". "I am still in Saigon / In my mind". A haunting story of a Vietnam veteran with PTSD, ten years after.
What I Like (Creepy): "The Legend of Wooley Swamp". A horripilating song about a miserly old man who lives in the swamp, and the thugs who foolishly tried to rob him. It doesn't quite live up to the promise of the beginning, but the conclusion ("And on summer nights / If the moon is right / Down by that dark footpath / You can hear those young men screaming / You can hear that old man laugh") is just fine.
What I Kinda Like (Mean): "Uneasy Rider". More chanted than sung, this story of a longhair whose car breaks down in Jackson has a bit of the Trickster about it. "Watch him, folks, cuz he's a thoroughly dangerous man!" Mean-spirited, but fun if you're in a vengeful mood.
What I Don't Like (You Guys Lost. Get Over It.): "The South's Gonna Do It Again". These days, Daniels seems to be a full-fledged Neoconfederate, and this presages that. Add the jingoistic "In America" to the Dishonourable Mention list.
Overall: I don't know if I'd buy this now, given the trajectory of Daniels' opinions; "Long Haired Country Boy" and "Uneasy Rider" suggest that there was more to him once. Still, I do like the WI(K)Ls above, and "Let It Roll" is pretty good too. A middle-ranking album.
