(I just noticed that in the previous Sunday Music, a month ago, I didn't mention the name of the singer! Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind is by Linda Ronstadt.)
Album Title: Cuts Both Ways
Why I Bought It: The video of "Can't Stay Away From You" hooked me on GE's work; I wound up with three of her albums, this among them.
What I Like (Melancholy): "Si Voy a Perderte". "Si voy a perderte ya, no vuelvas, no vuelvas jamás"... The album also contains an English-language version, "Don't Wanna Lose You". The Spanish version seems sharper-edged to me, more despairing and poignant.
What I Like (Falling in Love): "Say". Say won't you say won't you say you love me... That desperate need for reassurance, in the early stages of a love affair, swaying between fear and exuberance....
What I Like (The Way We Were): "Here We Are". A series of snapshots of love, ending with only the smoldering embers of love gone by.
Overall: I prefer the Let It Loose album to this one; the emotional range of Cuts Both Ways seems a bit more limited, without achieving the poignancy of the best of the earlier album. Still, there's some good stuff here. "Get On Your Feet" and "Ay, Ay, I" have some of the exuberance of the earlier album, and "Oye Mi Canto" isn't bad either. (Like "Si Voy a Perderte", it's considerably better in Spanish than in the English version, "Hear My Voice".) This album came out just before she was sidelined by a horrible bus accident; by the time she recovered and began singing again, I'd pretty much lost interest.
