I think I need to buy some new furniture. (The basement remodeling, let's face it, isn't happening this year. Maybe next.)

The section of the (very long) living room which contains the TV etc. is set off from the rest by a pair of love seats - half-length couches - at right angles to each other and to the walls. I bought them soon after I bought the house, probably in late '92 or early '93. For most of the intervening period, I have had dogs, and I have not enforced a "no dogs on furniture rule". Needless to say, by this time the upholstery on the love seats is in pretty bad shape.

Last night, as I was drifting off to sleep, I heard barking from the living room. Not the "yap yap yap" of an intruder (i.e., passerby) alert, but a steady "BARK! :pause: BARK!" Feeling irked, I got up and went in search. I found Buster, sitting on one of the couches, barking, apparently in some distress. Coming closer, I saw the problem: he had snagged the leash-hook on his collar on a strip of torn fabric, and was thereby pinned in place. To free him, I had to get him to lower his head, giving enough slack for me to unsnag him. Unfortunately, pressing down on his head with one hand left me with only one hand for the untangling, which proved not to be enough. Ultimately, I had to lean over him and press down on his head with my chest, freeing both hands to get the fabric loose.

I have now tucked a big beach towel into the cushions, which should prevent a recurrence for now. But I really think I need to buy new love seats.
