Album Title: The Best of the Temptations, vol. 2
Why I Bought It: Once again, Motown! (No, I don't have volume 1.)
What I Like (Classic): "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone". A vivid and sad biographical song. "Mama just hung her head and said..."
What I Like (And the Kitchen Sink): "Ball of Confusion". One of those "hell in a handbasket" songs, describing social disarray in a shotgun blast of images. Notable for the line, "And the only safe place to live / Is on an Indian reservation!" Kind of a cross between "Eve of Destruction" (which it name-checks) and "We Didn't Start the Fire".
What I Like (Dream On): "Just My Imagination". Who among us hasn't been there? Most dreams never come true....
What I Like (Velvet): "Stay". A seduction song, smooth as silk. This is the one with the stage direction, "Temptations sing!"
Overall: Just a beautiful album. The bitter "Masterpiece", the rollicking "Psychedelic Shack", the sweet "Hey Girl (I Like Your Style)" and "A Song for You" - they had such a wonderful range of mood and topic.
