Album Title: The Best of Gladys Knight and the Pips
Why I Bought It: Broadly, I wanted more Motown; specifically, for "Midnight Train to Georgia".
What I Like (Homeward Bound): "Midnight Train to Georgia". One of a bunch of songs about broken dreams: "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?", "500 Miles", more distantly "Message to Michael" and "Please Come to Boston" - I like them all.
What I Like (Melancholy): "Try to Remember / The Way We Were". The spoken prologue ("and smiles were... bright") is a special highlight, but the general tenor is beautiful. (Sadly, I don't believe it. "What's too painful to remember / We simply choose to forget" - would that it were so easy!)
What I Like (Hopeful): "I Can See Clearly Now". Honorable Mention: "I Feel a Song (in My Heart)".
What I Like (Luv): "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me". A song of... contentment, I guess.
Overall: There's nothing I actually dislike on this album. "On and On" doesn't do much for me; nor does "I've Got to Use My Imagination". But there's a good range of material, from "So Sad the Song" to "Perfect Love"; not a great album, but a solid one.
