Album Title: The Best of England Dan & John Ford Coley
Why I Bought It: Well, look. I have albums by Abba, by Air Supply, and by the Monkees. Why wouldn't I have England Dan & John Ford Coley? (Hmm. I don't have anything by Seals & Crofts or Loggins & Messina. Must correct that.)
What I Like (Uplifting): "Love Is the Answer". I love the crescendoing versicle-and-response bit at the climax (...And when you need a friend (Love one another) / And when you're near the end (Love one another)). I store this one in memory right next to "The Rose". (And why don't I have any Bette Midler?!)
What I Like (Cheery): "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight". I think it's the way the backup singers echo the chorus that pleases me the most. Honorable Mention: "We'll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again".
What I Don't Like (Self-pitying): "It's Sad to Belong". I'm not sure why this one turns me off; I kind of like "I Honestly Love You", which is the same kind of song. ED & JFC try for serious or sad in several songs on this album, and I don't really like any of them. Well, maybe "Nights Are Forever Without You"....
Overall: Yeah, they're lightweight, but when I need a pick-me-up, several of the songs on this album will do the trick. When they get maudlin, they're pretty bad, but on the positive pole they've got what it takes.
