Album Title: Best Always, Crystal Gayle
Why I Bought It: Attempting to expand my collection of country music.
What I Like (Melancholy): "Ready for the Times to Get Better". Another relationship on the rocks song. Believe it or not, one of the best things about the song is the way she sings the word "too". Honorable Mention: "Beyond You" and "For the Good Times".
What I Like (Frantic): "Break My Mind". It's not clear whether her lover is breaking up with her or just leaving on a trip, but Gayle's over-the-top plea for him to stay somehow makes me smile.
What I Like (Wistful): "When I Dream". The singer boasts of what she already has, but doesn't have what she most wants. Just lovely.
What I Don't Like (Tempo): "Oh Lonesome Me". I don't have any other covers to compare it with, but the rapid pace Gayle gives this song just doesn't fit the content.
Overall: She's not my favorite country singer, but she's pretty good at sad songs like the ones mentioned above. The album also includes her covers of standbys like "Crazy", "Always", and "I Fall to Pieces"; I prefer Patsy Cline on all three, though. Her cover of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" is pretty good, but Dusty Springfield (despite being British) does it better. "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" and "Talkin' in Your Sleep" round out the album pretty well.
