Feb. 20th, 2012 07:26 pm1. It appears that it's the position of the bowl, not the bowl itself. After I switched the two dog food bowls and refilled them, the same pattern emerged: left-hand good, right-hand bad.
2. As I was walking to the bus stop this evening, I heard someone call, "Sir!" I looked around, and saw a young woman - no one I knew - looking at me. She held up her hands next to her face and said, "I love your beard!" I said "Thank you" (what would you have said?), she said "You're welcome", and we went our separate ways. (What was that all about?)
3. I finished reading the biography of Hugo Black. A very interesting man: deeply flawed in some ways, but a great force for good in others. It's odd reading his words ("I am a strict constructionist. The First Amendment says, Congress shall make no law..., and I believe it means exactly what it says!") and thinking on what the words "strict construction" have come to mean in the forty years since.... The intricacies of his relations with his fellow justices - Frankfurter, Jackson, and Douglas in particular - were a revelation.
