Album Title: 20 Greatest Hits, Tammy Wynette
Why I Bought It: I was trying to expand my country music collection.
What I Like (Musically): "Stand By Your Man". Whatever may be said about the lyrics (and the line about his doing "things you don't understand" sticks in my craw), the score is definitely uplifting.
What I Like (Melancholy): "'Til I Can Make It On My Own". Maybe it's mopey; maybe it's clingy; but there are times when you need to ask for support. Kenny Rogers has a pretty good version of this one, too.
What I Don't Like (Maudlin): "Bedtime Story". A man has an affair and leaves his wife, then comes back to her open arms. Forgiveness is a lovely thing, but in the context of the entire album's passivity (except, perhaps, for "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad") this one leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Overall: I don't know if I'd buy this album again. There really isn't anything five-star on it. On the other hand, there are only one or two songs on it that I actually dislike. Put it in the filler category.
(Only one more of this cluster of "greatest hits" albums left.)
