Virtual Pets

My sister E asked me what I knew about virtual pets - e.g., which sites were safe and the like. I had to tell her that I know nothing, but that I'd ask around. Does anybody reading this know anything - not just about the safety question, but anything at all? Advice would be much appreciated.
