Week One

One week into Spring (sic) Semester, and things seem to be going reasonably well. (My student evaluations from last semester... could have been better, but they weren't bad.) I'm teaching my history of math course and the differential geometry course. Both seem to be going well, though I won't get solid data until the first graded work comes in.

I've shown the things I've discovered about geodesics on rectangular prisms to W; we'll be setting up a time for the seminar sometime next week. I'm hopeful that we may be able to get a complete answer to that problem this semester (although I still have no idea where those parabolas are coming from).

On the home front, I finally got all my music (~15GB) transferred to the new computer. I thought about using Dropbox, but realized that that would involve uploading the music through a dialup connection.... I also tried using a direct USB-USB cable, without success. The flash drive wound up as a slow but serviceable solution. All my security software, Civ IV, Access, Pegasus, ljArchive, and Semagic are also available now. (Pegasus is misbehaving oddly; I can receive mail, but for some reason can't send it. The university's webmail won't let me compose mail from the new computer, either, although it will from the old. I finally had to download Thunderbird. For the moment I'm using Pegasus to receive and Thuderbird to send, which is obviously an unstable situation, but I can't bring myself yet to abandon my archives and filtering tools on Pegasus....)

Buster's still on antibiotics, but the wound seems to be healing - it's just a small red pucker now. His spirits are good, and he loves the new squeaky toys. As for Gracie, well... I was listening to Gene Pitney's post-apocalyptic "The Last Two People on Earth" and singing along ("We've got to strive for all that it's worth / To build a brand new world") when Gracie, who was in my lap, started licking my nose. Kind of broke the mood.

Listening to Merrilee Rush right at the moment. I bought the album for "Angel of the Morning", but there's quite a bit of good stuff on it, including covers of "San Francisco", "Hush", and "Reach Out (I'll Be There)". (I didn't have any versions of the first two; I have covers by Diana Ross and the Four Tops of the last one.) I think I want to find the original version of "Hush". My mind's ear hears it in a gravelly male voice, but not one I recognize. (Ah-hah: it's by Deep Purple. Okay, that's my next CD purchase, I think.)

Ah, well. Back to... other things now.
