Further Acceleration Needed

stoutfellowI'd been figuring on buying a new computer sometime this year; the current one is going on nine years old, and time is passing it by. It seems that "sometime" is going to have to be "very soon".
W. drove me and the computer over to Best Buy this afternoon. The Geek Squad told me that the most likely problem was a defective (probably through age) Ethernet card. I bought a new one and installed it, without difficulty... and without effect.
I'm at wit's end. It'd be fastest to buy one at a bricks-and-mortar store, but bringing it home would require, again, the help of a friend. Going online would be slower, but would obviate the need to mooch. Decisions, decisions.
