Drivers

My preferred bus trip home from work involves taking the #17 to the downtown station and transferring to the #16, which passes directly in front of Shop'n'Save. Unfortunately, the #16 stops running around 6PM, and my last class Tuesday-Thursday ends at 7:45. In past years, I would have found someone who could give me a lift home, but I have discovered a different way, taking the #4 to the station and then the #19. This doesn't get me quite as close to home, but it's not a long walk either.

The problem with this is the timing: the gap between the #4's scheduled arrival and the #19's departure is only three minutes. When the #4 is running late, I ask the driver to call ahead and get the #19 to wait for us.

Thursday night, the #4 was late. Very late; I had just about decided to walk straight home (three miles or so), when a different bus arrived - one which I knew would stop at Wal-Mart, only a mile or so from home. I boarded, paid my fare, and immersed myself in my bus book. (It's a history of Safavid Iran, but that has no bearing here.) Thus, I didn't notice when the #4 finally arrived. The driver, not seeing me, got out and looked, eventually finding me aboard the other bus. She apologized for the delay - a train had broken down, directly athwart her route - and told me that she'd called one of the supervisors to bring a van and drive me straight to where I needed to go. A couple of minutes later, he arrived, and I got home no later than usual.

People complain about bus drivers, but I won't hear a word against MCT. This is not the first time their drivers have gone the extra mile for me, even without prompting.

This is a good place to live.
