Small Pleasures

stoutfellow1. Part of the wonderfulness of living with dogs involves things that, if you try to describe how entertaining they are, you just can't do it.
"She was bouncing toward the kitchen, and I stopped, and she came back and sat on my feet!"

Yeah, like that.
2. Madison County has changed its curbside recycling program. It used to be that we'd put plastic or metal goods into a little bin; cardboard or paper had to be bundled or bagged and set on top or nearby. Procrastinator that I am, I'd put off the bundling or bagging until the night before or the morning of, and then be too tired or too busy to do it. Piles of newspapers, stacks of chipboard, heaps of broken-down Amazon boxes.... In the new program, each household was issued an enormous (almost as tall as I am, and 3'x3' horizontally) wheeled bin, and told to just dump everything in. I keep it just outside my garage; every time I leave the house, if not otherwise encumbered, I grab an armful of stuff and pitch it in. Junk mail never makes it into the house, and the newspaper goes in as I leave for work. The clutter in my house has diminished measurably, and will continue to do so for some time to come. (Of course, a lot of the clutter is stuff I refuse to discard, but there's still a lot that needs pitching.) I'm quite pleased with the new program.
3. In an effort to get more greens into my diet, I've established a habit of eating a salad almost every day. Making salad from scratch, for a one-person household, is a pain, so I buy salad-in-a-bag, salad-toppings-in-a-bag, and salad-dressing-in-a-bottle. The salad-topping brand I'd been going with, Salad Finishers, has been dropped by Shop'n'Save, so I've switched to Marzetti toppings. (I've been using Marzetti dressings for a while; there are half a dozen or so that I find tasty.) The Marzetti toppings are much better than Salad Finishers, so my annoyance at losing My Brand has been replaced with gratitude. Now, if only Marzetti would make salad-in-a-bag too, they'd have my complete loyalty.
