Last fall, I had a landscaper in to deal with a drainage problem. Essentially, what he did was to dig trenches out from various gutterspouts, put piping in the trenches, and fill them in. At the end of the piping is a little pop-up, which lets the water emerge smoothly (and far from the house).
One of those pop-ups is in the back yard, inside the fence. Several times over the past months, I've glanced outside to see it lying on its side, near the pipe outlet. Each time, I've returned it to its place, hoping that that was sufficient to restore its function. Soon enough, though, it would be out again.
For a while, I thought that perhaps it hadn't been affixed firmly enough to the pipe, and the weight of water was forcing it loose. But one day, after restoring it, I came home from work to see it loose again. It had not rained that day.
One of the dogs - my guess is Buster - had been digging it up.
Today, I put it back, for what I hope is the last time. I got some wire garden fencing, about as tall as he is, and put it around the pop-up. The feet of the fencing are embedded four or five inches into the ground. With luck, that will deal with the problem.
I just looked outside. Buster is sitting near the fencing, and occasionally gazing at it. He looks discouraged.
