Trojan Horse?

My AVG threat detector has now, four times, warned me that a certain file is infected with "Trojan horse Generic16.AEXR". The alert does nothing; it claims that the problem has already been quarantined, and poses no threat. Meanwhile, AVG's website denies knowledge of any such Trojan horse; nor does Google give any hits.

Anyone have any idea a) what's going on or b) what I can do to make the damn thing either deal with the problem or shut up about it?

It's likely to be a false positive. AVG's heuristics engine appears to be a bit keen on labelling things as trojans for no good reason.

If you want to be sure, you could temporarily remove AVG and install Antivir Personal and run a scan. This product has the best detection rate of any free antivirus. http://www.free-av.de/en/products/index.html

If it finds the same problem, it may well label it better even if it can't remove it. If it doesn't find anything, then it's probably AVG playing silly buggers. If you prefer to keep using AVG, uninstall the Antivir and submit the AVG false-positive report to their support. Apparently they're pretty responsive with releasing updates to fix F-P problems.

Also, have you tried running something like SuperAntiSpyware to remove other funnies that might be on your system?

I'll check things out with Antivir, as you suggest. (I also have ZoneAlarm scan my system every night, and from time to time run SpyBot and/or Malwarebytes as well. I haven't run either of the latter since this began, though. I'll try that too.)
