I just finished recording my first album using my new turntable/MP3 converter, and it's a success. It took me a while to get everything working right, but trial and error led me aright, and I'm listening to some early Linda Ronstadt, off her Different Drum album. The sound is crisp and clear.
If anyone's interested, what I bought is a Sony PS-LX300USB. After recording all the tracks, I applied both of the cleanup tools (one to clear out static etc., the other to normalize peak volume) and saved as CD-quality MP3s. Very nice results indeed.
Addendum: I just went through my popular-music LPs and found no less than 25 albums, plus two soundtracks, that I want to add, in whole or part. This is going to take a while....
