Salt of the Earth
Jul. 19th, 2009 02:27 pmSince I don't drive, I was careful to buy a house within easy walking distance of a grocery store. For those extra-large loads (usually on Sundays), I bought a nice big cardboard grocery box; I load it up and, on leaving the store, swing it up onto my head and stride off. (I'm used to it; I first began carrying loads that way as a child, bringing books home from the library.)
Today, as I boosted the box onto my head, I heard an ominous ripping sound. The box was starting to tear; worse, it was tearing in the center, where I balance it. Carrying it in the usual way would only accelerate the damage.... I tried carrying the box in front of me, and was quickly reminded why I adopted the top-of-the-head method in the first place. In desperation, I put it on my head again, but off-center (and badly off-balance). Then I moved off, rather more slowly than usual.
As I made my way, I thought to myself, "In my experience, people around here are very helpful and friendly. It would be very nice if they'd show some of that right about now...." On cue, a car pulled up beside me, and the occupants offered me a ride home. I accepted with profuse thanks.
I'll have to get a new box.
