Spring [sic] Semester has begun. This term, I'm teaching two of my favorite classes, on the history of math and on differential geometry; should be fun.

This year, I aim to fix my own meals more often than not; this week's dinner is Brunswick stew. It's fairly tasty - nothing to write home about, but in weather like this it's warm and filling.

The recipe called for 14 oz. of canned peeled tomatoes. At Shop'n'Save, they come in 14.5 oz. cans.
It called for 8 oz. of canned or frozen sweetcorn. They come in 11 oz. cans.
It called for one pound of canned or frozen lima beans. They come in 14 oz. cans.

Needless to say, I did not follow the recipe precisely. Whatever works, works.

At least your cans aren't shrinking. My cherry pie recipe calls for two 16-oz. cans of cherries, and the "standard" can size for canned pie cherries has gone down more than two ounces less than that. At that amount, a few ounces is a big difference.

And they're more expensive.

I'd offer you my Brunswick-stew-from-cans recipe, but it relies on a brand only available in the South, I think--at least I couldn't find it the 2 years I was in Texas in grad school. Do you see Castleberry's products in your stores? BBQ Pork, BBQ Beef, and Brunswick Stew? (Yes, this recipe uses a can of stew to make stew...)
