I've been fighting a mild but persistent headache all day.

Last night, the local CBS affiliate showed something called "At the Zoo" in the timeslot of "Joan of Arcadia". I checked the online listings and found that they were going to show the JoA episode at 2:05 in the morning, so I dutifully set my satellite system and VCR to tape it then. This morning, I found that they had not shown it until 2:30 or so, so I only got half of the episode on tape. I started watching anyway, but then threw in the towel; I'll catch it when rerun time comes. It'll screw up my taping system, though. (I use two-hour tapes in SP mode, so as to put two episodes on each tape. This was an odd-numbered episode - i.e., it would have been the first episode on its tape - so I can't, so to speak, hold its place. It'll just have to go in out of order.)

The state legislature, in its wisdom, has mandated that all state employees must undergo training in ethics once a year. It takes the form of a one-hour session online, followed by a test. I haven't gotten to it yet, because I misplaced the letter informing me of this (and containing the details of where and how), but one of my colleagues told me that, during the session, I will be repeatedly threatened with jail. (He was smiling when he said it, for whatever that's worth.) I'm just thrilled at the prospect.

So the Cardinals are in the World Series, and - for the third time in my life - I find myself rooting against the local team. I was living in Chicago in 1984, when the Cubs faced the Padres in the National League championship series; I kept pretty quiet then, though I smiled a lot. (Steve Garvey put on an awesome show - pretty much his last hurrah - as the Padres came back from being down 2-0 in the best-of-five series.) In 1996, the Cardinals faced San Diego in the first round of the playoffs - that was Caminiti's MVP year - and beat them easily. This year, well, I like the Cardinals, but I'm sort of a legacy fan of the Red Sox; my father always rooted for them when he was younger. I think I'll just be quiet again.

Ah, well. I finished the books by Wood and Barnes, and I'll be commenting on them later; it's going to take a while to digest them, though, especially the Barnes. I need something upbeat, right about now...

Hope your headache passes quickly!

"The state legislature, in its wisdom, has mandated that all state employees must undergo training in ethics once a year. (snip) but one of my colleagues told me that, during the session, I will be repeatedly threatened with jail. (He was smiling when he said it, for whatever that's worth.)"

Heh. I would guess that there must have been more than a few involuntary participants who just didn't *get* the ethical part. Perhaps the trainers discovered that appealing to their fear of incarceration would at least ensure more ethical behavior, even if the morons weren't sure why there were having to alter their norm (g). Have fun! (veg)
