New Year

With the new semester (and academic year) almost here, I aim to resume my "cook on Sunday, eat all week" habit. The Supercookery! book has quite a few variations on the theme of pilaf; today, I made Pilaff with Mixed Fruit and Almonds. Ingredients: onion, green pepper, dried apricots, raisins, rice, chicken stock, and slivered blanched almonds, with salt and turmeric for spice. I just had the first serving, along with a small green salad, and it came out quite well. I'm not that fond of apricots per se, but they blended well with the other ingredients. (If anyone's interested in the recipe, let me know and I'll e-mail it; I'd rather not post it, for copyright reasons.)

This semester, I'll be teaching the GenEd statistics class, Calculus I, and the course on Foundations of Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometry. It's also time for me to draw up a list of possible Senior Projects. (We all give our lists to the person who teaches the Senior Projects course, and the students select their project advisers on that basis.) In the past I've been rather vague about it, but this year I think I'll name some specific areas in plane geometry - triangle geometry, properties of conics, maybe some elementary projective geometry.

Ah, well. Once more into the breach....

Got it, thanks. Maybe next weekend...

I was uninspired for weekend cooking, and just poured a can of salsa verde over country-style pork ribs, then baked until the meat was falling off the bone. Tonight I ate that straight--later in the week the leftovers will become enchiladas, or part of a quesadilla, or just heated up for another round.
