GRAAH!

The reservation confirmation from the hotel just landed in the Inbox of my Pegasus Mail. Pegasus doesn't like it, for some reason: every time I try to run Pegasus, I get a "... has encountered a problem and needs to shut down" message. If I could somehow delete the confirmation message, I suspect that would clear the problem up, but I CAN'T GET AT IT!

Does anyone know enough about Pegasus to tell me what to do?

In newer releases of Pegasus Mail, the cause of such continuous crashes is usually due to a badly-formatted HTML e-mail message in the new mail folder. For this problem to appear, you have to be using the preview panel mode instead of classic folders mode. This is because the preview panel mode automatically displays the top message (most likely corrupt) in the new mail folder while starting up. To resolve this problem, you need to move all of the .CNM new mail message files out of your mailbox directory (new mailbox location) and then start Pegasus Mail. If Pegasus Mail starts up fine (after clicking the "Continue" button in the locked mailbox dialog), then you can start moving back each .CNM new mail message--one at a time--and pressing Ctrl-W to refresh the new mail folder and select the message to view it. Repeat for each .CNM file. As soon Pegasus Mail crashes, you have found the culprit. Pull that .CNM file back out of the new mail directory and put all of the other .CNM files back into the new mailbox directory and restart Pegasus Mail again.

It's a pity there's no "safemode" you can use to start up without the preview pane in this kind of instance.

Thank you; that's just what I was looking for! I'll give it a try.

That did the trick. Many thanks; I was afraid I'd lost my archives for good.

Jim...when I have a problem like that I use another email program to try to pick it up. That works sometimes. other than that I would call the reservation people and have them send it again and use another email program for couple of days to pick it up. My pegasus doesn't even work anymore. don

Well, the problem's been resolved, anyway. (It was the same sort of trouble I had with that message you sent me a few months ago, except that that one wasn't sitting in my inbox - it was in my "Family" folder.)

That only tends to work if you haven't popped the message down to local storage, unfortunately. Most email programs use proprietary message formats or arcane indexing files that aren't that accessible via another utility. :-(
