stoutfellow: My summer look (Summer)

A little while back, [livejournal.com profile] akatsukami posted an appetizing-looking recipe for lamb chops with red peppers, and I decided to give it a try. The recipe called for, among other things, lamb chops (of course) and fresh mint.

Now, there are three grocery stores within easy walking distance of my house. Shop'n'Save is easily the closest, and gets almost all of my business. I found, though, that they had no fresh mint, nor any dried mint. Mint extract, they had. They also did not have lamb chops.

On to the next-closest, Schnucks. Mirabile dictu, Schnucks had fresh mint. They also had lamb chops. That is, they had one small package with two itty-bitty lamb chops in it. I sighed, put the mint back, and left without buying anything. (In retrospect, I should have bought the mint, but then I would have had to either take the mint with me to Dierberg's or go back home and then out to Dierberg's. Neither option appealed to me.)

Dierberg's! Dierberg's had lamb chops! Smallish, but thick and entirely satisfactory!

Dierberg's did not have fresh mint.

:sigh: I settled for dried mint. It was not the last compromise I had to make, but I'll spare you the rest. Suffice it to say that I succeeded in making, if not what [livejournal.com profile] akatsukami had described, at least a distant cousin. The first helping was decent; we shall see whether it improves with time.

My local Schnuck's also had fresh mint. It had a little more lamb...but not much; the four chops that I bought represented about a third of all that was on display.

You know, if you have even the smallest smidge of time to devote to it, mint grows quite well in a pot. If you let it go to seed, it's not (as) tasty, but the flowers aren't bad and the bees like it (and you'll have mint volunteers in your lawn :-)

And then you can make realy mint juleps whenever you please...

Or do you have a wettish place in your yard? It really likes wet. We have lots next to the lake, in sandy soil.

Wet... could be provided, without any difficulty.
