Wow...I'm...speechless. In all the time I lived in Edwardsville/Glen Carbon and worked on campus, I don't think I've ever seen the campus close because of the weather.
(I found your blog through a search on "Edwardsville" to see if anyone I knew came up. Hope you don't mind my intrusion.)
Hm. I've been here twenty-some years; in the early part of that stretch, I remember quite a few closings, mostly due to bad highway conditions. Since SIUE has shifted from being primarily a commuter campus to being residential, closings have been quite a bit rarer.
[I remember one occasion when I had a morning class and an evening class. I trudged onto campus in the morning, only to find that morning and afternoon classes had been cancelled, so I went home. There was no word on evening classes, so I came back around 4:00, only to find that evening classes had been cancelled as well. About eight miles of hiking through snow, all told, to no purpose.)
It's been about that long for me as well. We moved to Edwardsville from Granite City in '84. I graduated from EHS in '86 and started at SIUE shortly thereafter. (I completed about 2.5 years.) I remember several winter days when I wished they'd closed the place! *g* I didn't know this at the time, but I've got heart trouble, and that walk from the parking lot to the classroom buildings was very tiring for me, especially in extreme temperatures.
I remember when the first dorms were built and have been surprised to see how much of a shift there has been to a more "traditional" college setting. Next time I'm in the area to visit family, I want to drop in and have a look around the place to see how much it's changed. I still think SIUE has a pretty cool campus.
