Fall Semester begins on Monday. I was scheduled to teach two courses: first-semester calculus, and junior-level abstract algebra. (In my department, the standard yearly teaching load is five courses, split two-and-three between the semesters.) This afternoon, I got a call from the Chair; as a result of some last-minute reshuffling, they need me to teach advanced geometry as well. In return, I won't have to teach statistics next semester - just differential equations and differential geometry. (I think that's the deal; the university website hasn't updated the class schedule since the end of June.)

It's fine with me, but a little more warning would have been nice. I've only taught that geometry course once before. I don't even know what text we're using.

Well, as long as you are one week ahead of your students... Wait, it starts in less than a week. Does the website has the information on the text, and does the library still have that text available?

Best wishes on this!

Thanks. I will have time to prepare. The first meeting of the class is Tuesday night, and I'll be able to pick up a copy of the text Monday morning. I'm familiar with the content of the course, if not the organization of the material.

Besides, don't you find the adrenaline rush of the last-minute deadline stimulating? ;)

But then, it's easy for me to be snarky; it's at least partly envy of the students who get you for a teacher. Geometry is fun, but I'd probably prefer the history of math class you talked about so eloquently a while ago.
