Jury duty was rather dull. More precisely, sitting around in the Jury Assembly Room waiting for something to happen was rather dull. The last case on the docket settled out of court around lunchtime yesterday, so they sent us all home at 1:00. On the plus side, I did get about halfway through both of the books that I brought with me.

I also came down with a cold. I had a couple of appointments for today, but cancelled them in favor of sitting home with my buddies DayQuil and NyQuil.

I have a stack of statistics quizzes waiting for me, that I have to finish grading by tomorrow morning.

Someday soon I hope to have the energy to put together another post about Vernor Vinge, and also the next Ramble. Not today, though.

I just got a copy of Rainbow's End. I'm looking forward to having a bit of time to read it.

Love, C.

Jury duty in College Station and Blacksburg was a bit more exciting ... only a bit, though. Generally speaking, once the lawyers found out you were a professor during voir dire, they couldn't move fast enough to strike you. Guess they didn't want a bunch of eggheads sitting there wondering about the validity of data, the strength of argument, logic, reason, etc.

Every single prof I knew in both towns who ever got called got sent home almost immediately.

I never got as far as voir dire. (Monday, before letting us go, they had us fill out a form, asking obvious questions about the pending case. I answered in all honesty, but I'm quite sure that the answers would have... discouraged one side from accepting me as a juror. But that was the case that settled, anyway.)

I hope you feel better soon. Be sure to hydrate enough; don't forget your time release vitamin C.

Thanks. I'm pretty much over it now - a little residual phlegm, but that's about it - and I didn't miss any days of class.

Of course, now I hear that there's an outbreak of staph on campus. (One of my colleagues told me that she washes her hands after grading....)

I'm glad to hear you're better.

Stay away from the staph!!!
