Just in case anyone cares, here are the songs whose first lines I quoted a couple of days ago:

1.  It's comin' any day now, said the captain ("Defenders of the Flag", Bruce Hornsby)
2.  If today was not an endless highway ("Tomorrow is a Long Long Time", Kingston Trio)
3.  Wait a minute before you walk away ("You Need Me", Mariah Carey)
4.  Look on yonder misty mountain ("Epistle to Dippy", Donovan)
5.  Now if you feel that you can't go on ("Reach Out, I'll Be There", Four Tops)
6.  Like a fool I went and stayed too long ("Signed, Sealed, Delivered", Stevie Wonder)
7.  I don't wanna let another minute get by ("Faster Than the Speed of Night", Bonnie Tyler)
8.  Well I've got dreams enough for one ("New Horizons", Moody Blues)
9.  You're the only one to make me tremble ("I Want You So Bad", Gloria Estefan)
10. When you set a match to your heart ("Walking Through Fire", Mary Chapin Carpenter)
11. I need love, love, love ("You Can't Hurry Love", Supremes)
12. Whenever I'm with him, something inside ("Heatwave", Martha and the Vandellas)
13. As I walk this land of broken dreams ("What Becomes of the Broken Hearted", Jimmy Ruffin)
14. Nothing you can say can tear me away ("My Guy", Mary Wells)
15. Now if there's a smile on my face ("The Tears of a Clown", Miracles)
16. Lazy old day, rolling away ("Lazy Days", Enya)
17. Baby, it's your life ("If I Should Lose You", Billy Ocean)
18. Mother, mother, there's too many of you crying ("What's Going On", Marvin Gaye)
19. It's sad to think we're not gonna make it ("Neither One of Us", Gladys Knight)
20. I got sunshine on a cloudy day ("My Girl", Temptations)

You don't know "Neither One of Us"? That's a beautiful breakup song, similar in theme to the Carpenters' "Hurting Each Other". The main line of the chorus is "Neither one of us wants to be the first to say goodbye", if that helps your memory. I bought a two-disc Motown anthology solely to get that song. (It turned out to be well worth it in other ways.)

I guess I always tried to avoid "break up" songs; they were too painful. Remember the so-called "comedies" of the 70s, where the theme was that, usually, the husband in a marriage realized that he needed to "be free to be me" and embarked on a series of whacky (NOT) adventures? I *hated* those!

I can understand that. I'm a sucker for them myself, but I remember an incident when I was in college. I was playing a Diana Ross album, and "Touch Me in the Morning" had just begun when one of my roommates came in. He stood there, humming along and swaying to the music, for a moment; then he stopped, said, "I just remembered why I hate that song," and left the room.

Not really, for the most part. Between 1975 and 1985 I had only intermittent access to television, so I guess I missed (or should I say "didn't miss"?) a lot of things.
