For a couple of weeks now, as opportunity arises, I've been watching my recently-acquired Farscape DVDs. This evening I settled down to watch the next episode, "Thank God It's Friday... Again". Click over to the episode; press "Play"; watch as a furious D'Argo rampages through the shuttle bay, screaming Crichton's name; and listen as Anthony Simcoe's (real, non-D'Argo) voice comes on, introducing the commentary.

Hit "Stop". I don't want the commentary yet; I want to watch the episode by itself, then again with commentary.

Click around to various settings. No, the commentary for this episode is not set. Try again. D'Argo rampages and screams... and Simcoe's voice comes on again.

Hit "Stop". Click around to "Special Features" and ask for the commentary. (Maybe it's a toggle?) D'Argo rampages. D'Argo screams. (This time I see Crichton hiding up above him.) Simcoe's voice comes on.

Turn off the DVD player. Grumble over to the computer to complain and ask for suggestions.

Any ideas, anybody?

No magic bullet - it sounds sick. But some more God and Motherhood things I'd try are: after asking for the commentary (and still getting it), explicitly toggling it off. Watching another DVD that you've already watched and seeing if it happens there (it might be a DVD error). And turning it off and on again (which will happen automatically, since you've already turned it off.)

Your computer have a DVD? Does it happen there? From a recent post, I suppose your computer at work doesn't, but I suspect it is in a minority - i.e., try it on a colleague's computer. If the problem persists and is tied to the player, it is probably cheaper to get a new player. But it might be tied to the DVD itself.

Well, we had a power outage this afternoon, and the problem has gone away. Not the most satisfactory resolution, but I'll take it.

As a Trustee for a (municipal) Electric Company, I'll say that we like to provide these little extras when we can.

Can't you choose audio track by using the DVD remote (i.e, _not_ in the DVD disc setup menu) when the episode is already running?

It's possible. The DVD player is a combination DVD player/recorder and VCR, and the remote is rather complicated. I haven't figured out all the buttons, and I can't find the manual...

I got nothin'. It didn't do that when I watched it, so I presume it's not a mass-market defect in the disc itself. And it doesn't sound like the sort of thing that would happen with a damaged disc.

Try unplugging the DVD player--that should make it reset. (There might also be a "reset to original factory settings" command--check your owners' manual.)

See the reply to [livejournal.com profile] countrycousin: Mother Nature took care of the reset for me.
