One of my New Year's resolutions was to get more exercise. I was fairly faithful to this in January, but have slacked off this month. Evidently I offended the gods by so doing; today, they took steps to ensure that I got a fair bit of exercise. More under the cut.
Every year, my university hosts a math competition among the local high schools. Every year for, oh, I don't know how long, I've been a judge in the Oral Presentation event. This year's Math Fair was today.
I went out to the bus stop at the appropriate time, having first checked the online schedule to see how Saturday differed from the work week. There are two routes which stop there, the #16, which shuttles between Edwardsville and the university and which I regularly take, and the new #19, which heads south into Collinsville. At the expected hour, the bus came, and I boarded. I did not have my book with me, so instead I lapsed into thought. Thus, it was not until we were halfway to Collinsville that I noticed anything wrong... A brief conversation with the driver left me slightly confused, but raised the possibility that the two lines merge on Saturdays. In any event, there I was, five miles or so out of town, with the next bus not due for another half hour.
There was no way I would be able to get to campus on time; nor was there any way for me to contact the organizers to warn them of my absence. Making the best of a bad situation, I decided to hoof it back home. Five miles isn't that long a walk, after all...
It was cold: above freezing, but below 40F.
It was wet: less than stormy, but more than drizzly.
It was windy, enough so that my umbrella inverted four times on the way home.
The latter half of the path was lined with fast-food restaurants. I resisted the temptation to stop at KFC, but succumbed as I passed Burger King. (I loathe their commercials, but I was cold and wet and desperate.)
I am home. I have shucked my soggy socks and half-soaked pants, and am waiting for a call from campus inquiring as to my whereabouts. I expect to have to play Lucy to several Rickys, come Monday... :sigh:
