Sometime in the next year, I should begin encountering college students who were born the year the Soviet Union died.

My father was born about a year and a half after it came into being.

Tempus fugit....

Addendum: Whoops, whoops, whoops, I jumped the gun a little there. '89 was the year the Wall came down and the Warsaw Pact dissolved; the Soviet Union lasted another couple of years.

I stand by the sentiment, even so.

It's hard to imagine and somewhat alarming that there will be a whole slew of adults not even *knowing* about the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, the Hungarian massacre, etc., except as historical events that their parents and other older adults drone on about. I guess that makes us fossils, no? (g)

Then again, I am a person who has the bumper sticker, "I may be getting older but I refuse to grow up" hanging on her sewing room wall...

On a more serious note, I got over this when I married a man who was five and a half years younger than I am, and therefore was born after Kennedy was killed. I can remember -- barely -- Kennedy's assassination, if only because all my cartoons were pre-empted.
