Consequences

This story begins about three weeks ago, when someone from a local church group knocked on my office door, asking if I'd like to order some doughnuts. Amiable sort that I am, I did so, and she said they'd be delivered on a certain future date, which I promptly forgot. Indeed, I forgot about the entire transaction.

Today was the last day of finals week, and I went onto campus to finish grading calculus finals and to wait for the take-homes from my geometry class to come in. When I arrived, there was a box of Krispy Kremes, about a dozen of them, sitting in the window box outside my office. I took them inside and settled down to grading.

Grading is... well, let's just say I needed something to keep going. After a bit of grading, I ate one of the doughnuts. A bit more; another doughnut. And, and, and... By the time I finished grading, I had eaten the whole box.

This was at about 2:00. Now, the chair of a committee I'm on had invited all of us to a kaffeeklatsch, as a way of thanking us for our work. This was scheduled for 2:30.

When I got there, there was, indeed, a pot of coffee in the corner. On the table was a German chocolate cake.

And a pound cake.

And a pecan pie.

And something like strawberry cheesecake, only richer-looking.

And a pumpkin pie.

And at least two other similar items which I'm not remembering.

And there was me, with a belly full of Krispy Kremes.

Sigh. Actions have consequences...

Not quite. It's that I had eaten my fill of Krispy Kremes, which, for all the hype, are inferior to most of what was on that table; if I had waited - if I had shared out the doughnuts, as I actually considered doing - I could have had room for the good stuff.
