And that's all. (I must confess that all of these have been out of date for quite some time; since I compiled these lists, I've added seven or eight CDs worth of music to my collection, and reorganized the lot into 28 playlists. No, I'm not going through the whole cycle again. Well, maybe in a few years' time. Or maybe a Top 100 from the whole collection? Ah... probably not.)
- Strange Magic, ELO. Strange is the word. I still like Living Thing a little better, but this beats out Calling America for second place among ELO's offerings.
- Songbird, Fleetwood Mac. I suppose most people, thinking of FM, think of Stevie Nicks, but I actually prefer Christine McVie. Nicks' voice is a little nasal for my tastes. This song is only lightly instrumented, and McVie's sweet voice shines.
- Hello, Lionel Richie. One of the best songs of unrequited longing that I've ever heard.
- The 59th Street Bridge Song, Simon & Garfunkel. You wanted upbeat and bouncy,
hornedhopper? You can't beat this one.
- A Simple Desultory Philippic, Simon and Garfunkel. Silly, more a chant than a song, and with some funny "business" interspersed. (I suppose he eventually found his harmonica...)
- Alberta Bound, Gordon Lightfoot. This is a good example of the inverse of the "loneliness" theme; Lightfoot has several of those. Goin' home!
- Almost Home, Mary Chapin Carpenter. And here's another, albeit rougher-edged and more driven than GL.
