We're getting there...

  • Telefone, Sheena Easton. Easton shows off her emotional range in this frantic cry for reassurance.
  • More and More, Blood, Sweat and Tears. Neither as... excited... as, say, And When I Die nor as soothing as Sometimes in Winter - two other favorites of mine - but a thumping good time.
  • Everywhere, Michelle Branch. The singer spends almost the entire energetic song telling of the importance of... whoever she's singing about... to her ("You're everywhere to me", she sings in the chorus), only to end with a soft and unforeshadowed "...Do you see me?"
  • In Pictures, Alabama. A divorced man laments the fact that all he sees of his growing daughter, he sees "in pictures". A very sad song.
  • Dancing Queen, Abba. Not exactly deep, but bouncy and fun.
  • No Surrender, Bruce Springsteen. A lot of The Boss's songs are suffused with a kind of half-despairing refusal to bend the knee; this is one of the best of those.
  • We've Got Tonight, Bob Seger. This is the original version of the song. I like the duet better, but the solo has its good points as well.
  • Mar y Arena, Ana Gabriel. In Spanish, a celebration of love: "Somos / Como mar y arena" ("We are like the sea and the sand.")
  • Colour My World, Chicago. Upbeat but mellow; a comfortable song.
  • Eli's Coming, Three Dog Night. Not one of their better known songs, but a good one, about a mysterious and seductive visitor. "Eli's coming, hide your hearts, girls..."
