Making the turn...
- Time After Time, Cyndi Lauper. I like Lauper's voice; it's not classically beautiful, but it has its appeal.
- Walking on Broken Glass, Annie Lennox. What attracts me to this song is the way Lennox builds and then breaks tension in the title line. Heart pulls this trick off too, in some of their songs.
- Can't Stay Away From You, Gloria Estefan.
- Family of Man, Three Dog Night. The lighthearted tenor of this song is kind of at odds with its rather dire message, but I enjoy it.
- Strange Fruit, Billie Holiday. A harrowing song, bitterly contrasting the myth of the Old South with the reality of lynch law.
- You Baby, the Turtles. A fun, lilting song of appreciation.
- As I Lay Me Down, Sophie B. Hawkins. This is the song that brought Hawkins to my attention; I like the tempo-shifts, in particular. Another nice love song.
- The Weight, The Band. Probably their best-known song; I have no idea how to describe it. "Hey, Mister, can you tell me, where a man might find a bed?" / He just grinned and shook my hand, "No" was all he said.
- Love Is The Answer, England Dan and John Ford Coley. I really like the versicle-and-response segment that leads into the finale: And when you feel afraid (love one another) / When you've lost your way (love one another) etc.
- 'Til I Can Make It On My Own, Tammy Wynette. I have two covers of this; the other's by Kenny Rogers. A sad, post-breakup song.
