The Padres have been struggling since the All-Star break, falling into second place and dogfighting Arizona even for that position. But what's happening now is... just weird.

Saturday. Clay Hensley is scheduled to start, but, hours before game time, he's not feeling well. Mike Thompson is called up from Portland; he pitches creditably, but the Padres lose.

Sunday. Chris Young, the Padres' most reliable starter this year, has back trouble and has to be pulled early. Jon Adkins steps up to fill the gap while the trainer tries to get Hensley into good enough shape to pitch. Hensley throws four good innings and the Padres win in overtime.

Monday. Chan Ho Park is supposed to start, but his mysterious problem with intestinal bleeding recurs. Tim Stauffer is hastily summoned from Portland to fill in; he pitches a solid game and the Padres beat the Dodgers.

That's three starters struck down in three days. What is this, voodoo?

It occurs to me that I should mention that we do, actually, have *some* politicians whom I admire greatly and who have not added to the collective political mortification we occasionally must experience, being from Arizona.

Among the best: our current governor, Janet Napolitano; Sen. John McCain; and I was very fond of Bruce Babbitt, our former governor who became the Secretary of the Interior.

But do those three - even collectively - make up for Evan Mecham? ;-)

Whaaat? You don't like the term of endearment "p*ck*nn*nies"? (g)

I could never understand how Ev Mecham even *got* elected to begin with. Then his every step was a mortal embarrassment for those of us who understood that he really was descended from the apes, just in more recent times than the rest of us!
