Today was the day the new Schnucks opened. The temperature fell below freezing overnight, so I checked Dark Sky to see when a more reasonable temperature would come. At the appropriate time, I went into the bathroom to take a shower. I paused to brush my teeth; while doing so, I glanced out the bathroom window. I noticed a long, narrow piece of wood lying on the grass. "Oh, oh..." Craning my neck, I saw that it was a picket from the back yard fence, which had fallen (or, more likely, been knocked loose), leaving a gap easily enough for a medium-sized dog.
I abandoned thought of the shower. I dressed quickly (and sketchily), grabbed a leash, and went out to look for Buster. I didn't have far to look; he was across the street, harassing a young woman who was walking a pair of beagles. (Nothing hostile, more "Hey, let's be friends!" But the beagles' leashes were getting tangled...) I managed to get the leash on him, apologized to the young woman, and took him back inside. Then I grabbed a hammer and went out to restore the picket. (I'm not quite satisfied; I'll need to do more to secure it. Unfortunately, Schnucks doesn't sell nails.)
Never a dull moment.

Being Judicious
Oct. 21st, 2018 04:29 pmIllinois elects its judges. It's always hard to decide how to vote on those; but I just got some help on that issue, in one case. I just received a phone message (taken by the answering machine) in which Rep. John Shimkus endorsed a certain candidate. That's enough for me: I'm voting against that candidate.
Shimkus is a hard-line Republican. That he is pressing for this candidate suggest that a) the race is rather tight and b) the views of this candidate are probably far from mine. (Shimkus was also one of the people who should have caught the Mark Foley page scandal early. He has said that he regrets not acting, but I'm not inclined to forgive him.)
