Breakage

Remember that brand-new clothes dryer I bought back in March?

Sunday, with an eye to the impending new semester, I did a batch of laundry. After giving the load a 60-minute session in the dryer, I found the clothes were still damp. Puzzled, I gave them another forty minutes, with the same result. A bit of investigation showed that, though the heat came on when the Start button was pushed, the barrel did not turn. It could be turned by hand, but the automatic turning mechanism was not working. I surmised a broken belt, and spent a few minutes hanging the damp clothes from every available spot, including the handle of Gracie's stroller.

This morning, I went over to Sears Hardware to report the incident, hoping to avoid a bout with a phone menu. The service rep told me I'd have to make the call, but agreed to get through the thicket of menu items before handing the phone to me. This done, I spoke briefly with the telephone service rep. A new belt needs to be ordered, so the repair can't be made until the 30th. That means one more round of hanging the clothes around the house....

For once, I'm glad I bought the Sears warranty. (I generally decline warranties, but for some reason accepted a year's worth this time, and it's paid off.)
